tour the world in a winnebago
study, study, study, study, study, study, study
I don’t know what I want from this degree in terms of career, it is really an exercise in personal development, a chance to improve my critical thinking and writing skills, a chance to learn and grow. So with the somewhat vague goal of “development” in mind, my plan is just to do as well as I can. I admit though, I’m pretty tough on myself and sometimes I feel my best is not good enough. My own worst critic and all that…
I’ve studied for almost six months now. I have enjoyed the content of my subjects (I’m studying a rad Gender subject at the moment) however, the schedule is really intense: before the end of this month I have two assignments and one exam due, then next month I have two exams and one assignment due. In addition, we don’t have any holiday breaks and our exam weeks overlap with the first week of our next study period. The pressure really is on, and some days after work I don’t feel like reading journal articles or researching an assignment, but then I think of some of my classmates who are mothers with babies or who are living in remote parts of Asia (for reals!) and I think: if they can manage to do it, then so can I.
Motivating myself is one thing, but apparently extracting a clear and helpful response from tutors is another… Studying online means interaction with classmates and tutors takes place via discussion boards and forums. Generally this is an ok arrangement, however recently my classmates and I have requested guidance for our assignment and we’ve received responses as clear as mud. It seems we’re all getting ambiguous answers or three word sentences in return to our carefully worded questions, which has inspired one of my classmates to write this note to our tutors on the discussion board:
“I’m cool to have relaxed tutors and I think you’re both great guys, but if you’re going to respond with vague answers then I expect some leeway and generous marking.”
If we were studying full time and could visit with our tutors or talk with our classmates face-to-face we would probably not have this problem (and not feel so helpless/out of our depth/dumb). It’s a bit frustrating, especially when we (external students) pay the same amount of money to complete our degree as those who are full time and have the benefit of face-to-face interaction, not to mention all of those resources!
Oh well, in the words of my Mum, we can only do our best.
Funny, I plan to spend my money the same way

Shazanney-Pie-Hands
Shan I are crazy busy at the moment with fingers in many pies - mmmapplepiemmm.
On top of working full time, Shan is completing her Bachelor of Journalism completely externally, which means she has to set her own pace and learn everything from text books and online tutorials. She's doing really well, and has determination and commitment that I admire. Instead of crashing out on the couch at night like I do, she sits up and reads and works on assignments.
As ya'll know, I'm arranging the Queen's Birthday Community Awards which is taking place in about six weeks (EEEP!). It's coming together slowly but I keep thinking of things I need to do at 3am, and when I toss and turn it always wakes Shan up. She's sweet and always asks if I'm ok, and I always say yes, and she cuddles me and it makes me feel better. And then I say thank you in the morning and she never remembers doing it.
We've also just started working on a new project with a web developer from my work, Nick. With his web-smarts and our word-smarts we're putting together an awesome new site that reviews things we love. Shan's going to review music, I'm going to review all things cool (accessories, new gadgets, skateboards), my friend Michael is going to review men's fashion and beauty and Nick is going to cover tech. We're also going to have travel, women's fashion and other sections, but we're still looking for people to look fill these. The site isn't going to focus on the tech specs and all that boring stuff, it's going to be our review on whether or not it lives up to the hype, if it's as cool/useful/delicious/comfortable as it's made out to be. Once the web address is secured and the site is up I'll introduce it with a bit of fanfare. Nick says it should be up tomorrow, so stay tuned!
we <3 derby!
And OHMYGOODNESS!! We've never had so much fun just watching a sport being played! It was totally fun from start to finish and the 400+ crowd was an awesome mix of rockabilly's, gays, straights, families - everyone . They had a girl punk band play before the teams came on, then the girls entered with each being introduced by their roller derby name. When "Pinch Anna Punch" (Penny) entered with her team The Golden Roughs we cheered!
It took Shan and I most of the first half to figure out the rules and how the scoring worked, but by the time the second half kicked in we were all over it and loving every minute. We especially loved the bravado and the knocking each other down. Those girls are so girly yet so tough, and the way they can take a fall makes me proud to be a girl!
One of the first thing we'll be doing once we get to Vancouver is finding a roller derby team to support. Roller Derby Girls Rock!

All the small things
- getting the green light at the intersection in front of our supermarket (cos if we get that one, then we get the next one and we're home in 2 minutes!)
- getting through the day without a parking ticket after forgetting (refusing!) to pay the meter
- thinking there aren't any good chocolates left in the variety box only to shake them up and find a Time Out at the bottom
- having my lovely girlfriend wake up just a little bit early/me staying up just a little bit late so we can hang out just a little bit longer
- being home in time to watch The Simpsons at 6pm AND finding it's an episode I haven't seen
- getting an email from Shan during a frantic moment at work that simply says "I loves you"
lean forward expectantly
i make me laugh
Two elephants walk off a cliff...... boom boom!
Apparently, 1 in 5 people in the world are Chinese. And there are 5 people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my Mum or my Dad......Or maybe my older brother Colin. Or my younger brother Ho-Cha-Chu. But I'm pretty sure it's Colin.
