if we can't be happy friends

We were on the skytrain the other day when Zanne started singing a Michael Bolton song we'd just heard in London Drugs - except she had the lyrics slightly wrong...

Zanne: "How can we be lovers if we can't be happy friends..."

Me: "It's not happy friends, it's just friends"

Zanne: "No, he sings: how can we be lovers if we can't be [pause] ha-ppy friends..."

Me: [Laugh so hard I cry] "No, no. It's just: can't be [pause], can't be friends. He repeats the can't be...

Zanne: No, it's not... [confused/embarrassed]. Well happy friends sounds better anyways.

Me: Ba-ha-ha!
